Portrait
Joel Fischer co-heads the internal investigations practice at Bär & Karrer and is recognised as one of Switzerland’s leading advisers on corporate crises, regulatory enforcement and white-collar matters. His practice focuses on complex investigations, compliance and governance, banking and finance, M&A and corporate matters.
He advises boards of directors, senior executives and multinational companies in complex cross-border investigations, enforcement proceedings and sensitive regulatory matters. He is regularly called upon to advise leadership teams in situations involving significant reputational, regulatory and governance exposure, including matters with existential implications for the business. His work often involves parallel proceedings and coordination across multiple jurisdictions, including matters involving US and broader international scrutiny.
Joel advises clients across a broad range of industries, including financial services and fintech, life sciences, trading and commodities, energy and industrials. His work frequently covers anti-money laundering, sanctions, trade compliance, corruption, tax evasion, ESG, AI and cyber-related risks.
He is consistently ranked by Chambers, Legal 500 and Lexology Index as a leading lawyer in investigations, regulatory compliance and white-collar matters. He is a four-time recipient of the Lexology Client Choice Award. Clients describe him as “a uniquely excellent lawyer in the Swiss market”, “the real deal when it comes to compliance matters in Switzerland” and “the go-to person when things are not allowed to go wrong”. Clients particularly value his strategic judgement, multidisciplinary approach and ability to serve as a trusted adviser in high-pressure situations.
Beyond his legal practice, Joel Fischer is actively engaged in shaping the broader discourse around enforcement, governance and corporate crises. He is co-host of the podcast The Gatekeeper – Inside Risk and Consequence, where he discusses corporate crises, leadership under pressure, enforcement trends and emerging risks with leading practitioners, regulators and experts from business and technology.
He also serves on the editorial boards of GRIC – The Gatekeeper Journal for Regulatory, Investigations & Compliance and GesKR – Swiss Journal of Business and Capital Markets Law and is furthermore Chair of the Swiss Enforcement Conference, a leading Swiss forum bringing together senior representatives from FINMA, SECO and the Office of the Attorney General of Switzerland, together with practitioners from the legal and compliance community.
Prior to joining Bär & Karrer, Joel worked for the President of the Supreme Court of Israel and as a management consultant with a leading global consulting firm. Drawing on this experience, he combines legal expertise with a strong understanding of strategic and commercial decision-making.
