Matthias Bizzarro

Matthias Bizzarro is a partner in Bär & Karrer’s tax practice, based in Lugano. An attorney-at-law and certified tax expert, he advises Swiss and international companies, entrepreneurs, family offices and private clients on complex domestic and cross-border tax matters, including matters involving Switzerland and Italy.

Matthias has particular expertise in tax litigation and regularly acts as lead counsel in complex tax disputes and constitutional tax matters before cantonal and federal authorities and courts. His contentious practice encompasses corporate and private-client tax matters, as well as indirect-tax, customs and administrative-law disputes. His work includes successful, precedent-setting appeals before the Swiss Federal Supreme Court. His extensive litigation experience enables him to anticipate contentious issues and develop pragmatic strategies from the earliest stages of a matter.

Matthias' advisory practice focuses on international tax and private-wealth planning, including cross-border relocations to Switzerland, tax-residence matters, succession and estate planning, trusts and private-wealth structures. He regularly advises internationally mobile high-net-worth and ultra-high-net-worth individuals and families on the interaction among their personal, family and business interests across multiple jurisdictions.

In the corporate sphere, Matthias advises on domestic and cross-border restructurings, M&A and other transactions, including venture-capital and start-up financing rounds. His combined tax, private-client and litigation experience enables him to provide integrated strategic advice in matters involving both commercial and private wealth considerations.

Matthias holds an LL.M. in Taxation from Georgetown University Law Center. He is a lecturer in tax law at SUPSI and, since 2023, co-heads the law module of the EXPERTsuisse program preparing candidates for the federal Certified Tax Expert examinations. He is a member of the editorial board of Novità Fiscali and speaks regularly at Swiss and international conferences.

Matthias served as Switzerland’s national reporter at the 2025 International Fiscal Association Annual Congress in Lisbon and was named "Lawyer of the Year – Switzerland" at the 2026 Citywealth IFC Awards. He works in Italian, German, French, English and Spanish.
