Dr. Christian Kunz co-heads Bär & Karrer's Data Protection & Digital Economy as well as Technology, Media & Telecommunications (TMT) practice groups.
He is an expert in data, data protection, cybersecurity, and technology law, including AI and EU digital regulation.
Christian advises Swiss and international clients across the full spectrum of data, data protection, cybersecurity, and technology law, including data strategies and data protection-related processes, the use and monetisation of data, (cloud) outsourcings, international data transfers and data disclosure requests (e.g., under MLAT or the U.S. Cloud Act), as well as cybersecurity governance and compliance, incident management and response, and cybercrime matters.
He regularly advises on artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced technology projects (AI governance and compliance, Machine Learning, Big Data analytics, blockchain / distributed ledger technology (DLT)), data-driven business models and platform solutions (XaaS, cloud services, IoT, online platforms, digital marketplaces), digital infrastructure and technology transactions, and other complex Swiss and European data protection, cybersecurity, and technology law matters. His practice extends to advising on key EU digital regulation frameworks, including the NIS2 Directive, the Cyber Resilience Act (CRA), the Digital Operational Resilience Act (DORA), the AI Act, the Digital Services Act (DSA), and the Digital Markets Act (DMA).
Christian is an officer of the Technology Law Committee of the International Bar Association (IBA) and vice-chair of its cybersecurity subcommittee since 2026. He served as KnowledgeNet Chapter Chair of the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) in Switzerland from 2022 to 2024. He regularly gives lectures, participates in panel discussions, publishes scientific articles and newsletters, and holds internal and external trainings in his areas of expertise. Christian advises boards and senior management on cyber risk and resilience strategies. He is an author in the "Basler Kommentar zum Datenschutzgesetz" and in the "Orell Füssli Kommentar zum Datenschutzgesetz", leading commentaries on the Swiss Federal Data Protection Act. He is also a lecturer at the Universities of Zurich, Fribourg, and St. Gallen as well as at ETH Zurich, where he teaches courses in data protection, technology law, cybersecurity, and related subjects.
